Dominic Stokes is a violist, composer, actor, and director who has established himself as one of London’s leading young contemporary artists.
His passion and musical facility for all things contemporary has led him to work with groups at the forefront of the new-music scene, such as the Riot Ensemble, “The supergroup of top soloists playing new music”,
Manchester Camerata,
12 Ensemble,
and Explore Ensemble,
including multiple appearances on BBC radio 3 and 4 as a soloist and chamber musician.
Having started his musical life as Head Chorister at Westminster Abbey, making music in collaboration with others runs in his blood. His skill in solo performance and chamber music has led him to tour parts of Europe, Asia and North America, and facilitated him to partake in
many of Europe’s top festivals, such as the Dartington summer festival, the Lucerne festival,
and the Lake District chamber music festival. He has been selected for chamber music
masterclasses from Alfred Brendel, Hugo Ticciati and Andrew Watkinson, and solo
masterclasses from Max Baillie, Thomas Riebl, and Simon Rowland- Jones.
As an ensemble musician Dominic has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many of our lifetime’s most prolific performers, including Jacbob Collier, Nicholas Collon, Irvine Arditti, Seymon Bychkov and Sir George Benjamin.
He is also the current instrumental scholar at St James’ Piccadilly,where he enjoys partaking in music for worship as a violist, pianist, and as part of the choir.
Dominic has had the privilege of collaborating with many prominent composers, including Naomi Pinnock, Bara Gilasdottir, Dobrinka Tabakova, Sally Beamish, Anna Thorvalsdottir and Ben Nobuto, premiering chamber and solo works in some of London’s most prestigious venues, such as King’s place and the Barbican centre.
Dominic is the founder and director of Rothko collective, a young new music group dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the concert format. With his group, he has commissioned over 20 new works, toured across Europe, awarded first prize in nonclassical’s competition for emerging talent, given multiple highly acclaimed performances, and released a studio and a live album.
Dominic is dedicated to opening up classical music to a wider audience, to make it more accessible and change the way it is perceived in society.
Dominic is a Britten Pears Young artist for the 2024-25 season, and a fellow at the Guildhall school of music and drama.
